Since the Pacto toilet requires neither water nor power and functions in any external conditions, it is often used in emergency situations and in aid relief operations.
Kobe 1995
Following the large earthquake in Kobe, Japan, in 1995, some 12,000 Pacto toilets were bought by the City of Kobe. One toilet was placed on every floor of the residential buildings in the affected area, providing inhabitants with sanitation facilities while utilties were repaired.
Turkey 1999
A natural disaster in western Turkey in 1999, a series of eathquakes centering on the town of Izmit, made thousands of people homeless. Aid operations focused on providing shelter and sanitation for victims; Pacto toilets were set up in tents to give both sanitation and much-needed privacy.
